The Early Years and the Path to Independence

Matthias Kostner, born in 1982 in St. Ulrich in the Gröden Valley, is an emerging sculptor who embodies the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary expression. Influenced by his artist family, whose roots date back to the sixteenth century, Kostner creates sculptures that place everyday people at the forefront.

Matthias Kostner discovered his passion for sculpture early on and honed his talent from 1996 to 2000 at the Vocational School for Sculpture in St. Ulrich. During this time, he delved deep into art, learned its traditions and techniques, and developed his craftsmanship. In 2009, Matthias Kostner was ready to spread his wings and operate as an independent artist, opening his own workshop in St. Ulrich, where he has since brought his creative vision to life.

Since 2009, Matthias Kostner has been making waves at the sculpture fair "UNIKA." As a native of Val Gardena, he is deeply rooted in the tradition of wood carving art of Val Gardena, famous for its nature, tradition, and as the cradle of wood carving art dating back to the sixteenth century.

Matthias Kostner creates works that capture the expressive power of the moment without resorting to existentialist pathos. His sculptures depict people in movement and action. Through his subtle use of wood and other materials, Matthias Kostner creates works that capture life in all its diversity and beauty.
